Eye, verbal and motor response, scored and reported the way the scale asks — by component, not as a single number.
—Nothing scored yet3 to go
EEye opening
Open the eyes, then speak, then apply fingertip pressure.
VVerbal response
Ask for name, place and date.
MMotor response
Ask for a two-part movement; then apply a stimulus to the fingertip, trapezius or supraorbital notch.
A component that cannot be tested is reported as NT and no total is given — "E4 NT M6" says more than a number that quietly assumed something. Conventionally a total of 8 or less is taken as the point at which a definitive airway is considered.
